My accountant said THIS?! 😲

June gross vs. net revenue

šŸ’Œ What’s happening this week:

  • June gross vs. net revenue (and a peek at Q1 vs. Q2)

  • Journaling prompt:

  • Making this my new AM routine

  • Exercises to calm anxiety & overwhelm

ā€œMoney Diaries: June’s Gross vs. Net Revenueā€

This week I had a meeting with my accountant to talk about…

  • Q2 taxes

  • My profit & loss (P&L) sheet

  • And touch base on what the rest of the year looks like financially

Being more financially savvy has been a big goal of mine for a long time. I’ve always been an ā€˜intuitive’, ā€˜listen to my gut’, financially literate person…

Which, if you ask my partner who used to work with me to manage my bookkeeping… he might say being an ~intuitive financially literate person~ is ā€œgreatā€ but you can’t really make the best decisions from that type of knowledge šŸ˜…

And while I didn’t want to accept that…

Well, he was right.

I used to operate my business by vaguely knowing the numbers behind things like:

  • Business expenses (I knew an estimate of how much I was spending per month, but never really got clear on the exact amount)

  • Sales (I knew how much I sold, but would get distracted by the shiny number)

  • Revenue (I would add sales and cash flow together, and feel a rush of excitement because I would see a big number)

  • Profit (I didn’t like looking at this number because it would confirm I had waaaay too many expenses lol)

Since 2023, when my marketing and media agency started declining, and then in 2024 when I took my adult gap year, I have been VERY ADAMANT about tracking everything that goes in and out of my business and personal accounts.

I started trimming ALL my expenses and keeping things as lean as possible.

This helped me to cut around 1500€ of business expenses per year, removing some platforms and programs I was just paying for out of habit that were costing me 300-600€ a year!!

And since removing all these platforms, before I decide to pay or subscribe for anything… I take myself through a series of questions about how much of the tool I’ll be using, will it make a difference in my business performance or client experience, and if it will simplify something I’m spending too much time on.

Thanks to that, I’ve been operating at a pretty lean business model since scaling down (and eventually closing) my marketing and media agency and going freelance as a Marketing Consultant and Multicultural Creator.

So… I was SO surprised that my accountant told me in this week’s call that…

šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰ I AM ON TRACK TO MAKE MORE PROFITS THIS YEAR THAN THE LAST 3 YEARS OF BUSINESS BY THE END OF THE YEAR. 😭😭😭😭

INSERT ME DANCING AND JUMPING TO CELEBRATE THIS HUGE MILESTONE!!

The hard questions I’ve been asking myself, the small steps I’ve been making, and the intentionality behind every decision I’ve made since 2024 have culminated in this great news… which is just a sign that whatever I’m doing is aligned with the intentional life I want to be living in THIS STAGE of my life.

Anyway, that was a long way to say that we’re back with another Money Diaries šŸ’ø series to break down June’s gross and net revenue. You can read it all below, and if you missed May’s you can read last month’s edition here.

June’s Gross vs. Net Revenue

*Just a reminder that gross is before taxes and expenses, and net is what I get to keep!

GROSS REVENUE = 1882,13€

  • Marketing Consulting (3 contracts)

  • Content Specialist role

  • Passive income from a course

Where my clients came from:

  • No new clients this month, just continuing to work with my current clients

CASH FLOW = 1882,13€

JUNE EXPENSES = 608,87€

  • Accounting fees

  • Freelancer registration fees in Spain

  • Cloud storage

  • Internet & phone

  • Canva

  • A marketing membership

  • A Creator membership

  • This newsletter platform

  • My membership platform

  • Font suite for my new brand (!!)

NET REVENUE (from cash flow) = 1273,26€

While in June I didn’t meet my 4K€ revenue goal, that’s ok!

I got to take time off and be with my family, I got to walk the Camino de Santiago for a 2nd time, and I have projects in the pipeline for July, August, and onwards.

I did the math to figure out how Q1 compared to Q2 in terms of revenue and cash flow, and here’s what I found:

  • Revenue from Q1 to Q2: Decreased by 13% (this makes sense because I had a few projects in Q1 where clients paid in full that I am still wrapping up)

  • Cashflow from Q1 to Q2: Increased by 27% (which is WAY better in my opinion because I can put more money into savings!!)

This quarter, I’m zeroing in on more specific actions I can take that will 10x my results with 2x of the effort…

āœļø THIS WEEK’S JOURNALING PROMPT

Braindump: 10 things that spark joy for me

Keeping it simple this week because I’ve been feeling a bit sluggish over here. I’m not sure if it’s the heat, the lack of sleep because of the heat, or the fact that I’m almost on my period… but this week I was NOT feeling it. Instead of ā€˜getting super deep’ about what’s causing my sluggish feeling, I just acknowledged it and then made a list of 10 simple things that spark joy for me. This helped me gain a little momentum to bring some good energy to my everyday, even when I’m not ā€˜really in the mood’.

šŸ’» THINGS THAT STUCK OUT TO ME

šŸ—“ PREPARING FOR THE WEEK AHEAD

āŒ I DELETED TIKTOK OFF MY PHONE

I started getting addicted to scrolling TikTok again 🤪

Which then led to doomscrolling, brainfog, and intense moments of comparison. One day while scrolling TikTok I had a moment of realization that this app, although can provide some comic relief, sucks my time and creative inspiration/motivation.

So… right then and there, I deleted the app off my phone, and I haven’t looked back. I will be honest, I’ve had some withdrawals this week, but ultimately, I feel SO MUCH LIGHTER.

🌻 GOODIES YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED

If you’ve also been feeling lots of anxiety, overwhelm, and hopelessness due to the state of the world, you’re not alone. In this video, I’m sharing 5 exercises I turn to when those feelings creep in and start taking over…

Instead of doom scrolling and going down rabbit holes on the Internet, which, to be honest, just leave me feeling worse, these exercises have helped me bring more calm and spaciousness to my life.
